About

The Phase Wanderer by Rachel Lachat

Rachel Lachat is a Brisbane based artist located in North Brisbane/Moreton Bay area of Queensland. After 25 years as an accountant, she re-established herself as an art professional in September 2023. Her preferred medium for painting is oil, but she also enjoys working with acrylic and watercolour. She also has a passion for charcoal/pastel drawing and digital sketching using iPad and ProCreate.

The art reflects her exuberant personality and intensely reactive nature - brightly coloured, heavily emotive, highly detailed. In her search to define the relationships between the diverse, she will often incorporate unexpected and surreal elements or highlight unusual items as the focal points.

Although her artistic journey began with still life and landscapes, her passion is with figurative and narrative realism with a particular emphasis on internal emotional struggles. Regardless of the subject matter, there is always a recurring "Operatic" visual aesthetic of highly saturated colour, emphasis on details and textures, and an overtly emotional statement.

CURRENT WORK IN PROGRESS

"New Lands" is an ever-evolving seascapes series where the viewer is invited to imagine various Australian seascapes as if they are the first to reach that place, untouched and full of new hope. Rachel is particularly interested in experimenting with the challenges of light and water effects as the sun moves through the sky.

"My Personal Melodrama" is a group of realistic oil paintings that investigate the emotionally charged minefield of a modern middle-aged mother navigating teenage boys and dramatic daughters, intense family relations and neurodiversity. Drawing inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman mythology, she is seeking out the necessary melodramatic emphasis that such an existence demands.
